Notice of Rejection

If you receive a Notice of Rejection you have the following options

1. Pay the Penalty Charge Notice

  • In the case of a Penalty Charge Notice issued for a parking, bus lane, moving traffic, clamp/remove, lorry ban, littering or waste receptacle contravention, this should be done within 28 days beginning with the date of service of the Notice of Rejection
  • In the case of a Penalty Charge Notice issued for a congestion charge or low emission zone contravention, this should be done within 28 days beginning with the date of the notice.

If you make payment within 28 days, no further action should be taken by the enforcing authority

If your vehicle was clamped or removed, you will not need to make any further payment as you should have paid all of the related charges to release the vehicle.

2. Make an appeal to the Parking and Traffic Appeals Service (PATAS)

A Notice of Appeal form should be sent by the enforcing authority with the Notice of Rejection. If this form is not enclosed, the enforcing authority should be contacted to obtain one.

  • If you wish to challenge a parking, bus lane, moving traffic, clamp/remove, lorry ban, littering or waste receptacle Notice of Rejection, you should complete the form and send it to PATAS within 28 days of the date of service
  • If you wish to challenge a congestion charge or low emission zone Notice of Rejection, you should complete the form and send it to PATAS within 28 days of the date of the notice.

If you wish to appeal to the adjudicator later than the 28 days, you may still send your appeal, but you must say on the Notice of Appeal why it is late. The adjudicator will then decide whether to allow you to appeal late

Further details of the enforcement process for each specific contravention type can be found on the  pages for Parking and Traffic Adjudicators and Road User Charging Adjudicators
